about

At the dawn of the day they were early away
With Toad as their mentor and guide.
Mole tended the horse while Rat with remorse
Thought of nothing but his riverside.
While Toad prattled on of the pleasures ahead
And of stars being one’s roof and of earth being one’s bed
And of how he regretted the years spent instead
Wasted on other fruitless pursuits.

At the end of the day in a field by the way
They set up their camp for the night.
The Mole found some grass for the horse’s repast
While Rat set the fire alight.
Then Rat cooked the supper while Mole made their beds
And after they’d eaten Toad yawned, stretched and said
“Let’s start bright and early. Now I’m off to bed”
Leaving Ratty and Mole to wash up.

The following morning the Mole and Rat yawning
Rose up to begin a new day.
Toad slept on however despite their endeavours
To rouse him and be on their way.
But when they’d succeeded he grumbled and groaned
“It’s cold and it’s early. O, leave me alone!
What wouldn’t I give to be back in my home
In my nice, warm and comfortable bed!”

Rat brightened and said to the Mole “Don’t be sad!
It’s always the same with old Toad and his fads
They never last long so rejoice and be glad
We’ll be home before very long..”
